The Texas Port of Freeport closed to inbound traffic on Nov. 5 in preparation for a storm rolling into the Gulf of Mexico.
Tropical Storm Rafael is expected to cross over Cuba and enter the Gulf of Mexico on the evening of Nov. 6 at hurricane strength. Current storm projections show Rafael headed for the Louisiana coast and weakening into a tropical storm on Nov. 10.
The Moran Shipping Agency released the notice on the status of Port Freeport, the home of Freeport LNG.
The LNG facility experienced a temporary shutdown Nov. 1 thanks to a power fluctuation, but was back online by Nov. 4, according to a report by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
Several major energy companies with operations in the Gulf also gave notice on Nov. 5 that workers are evacuating offshore platforms throughout the area, Reuters reported.
On Nov. 4, the U.S. Coast Guard declared a “whiskey” condition in some Florida ports. The status requires vessels to make preparations to either dock for a storm or prepare to leave within 24 hours.
